Green Building Design
One of the best ways to achieve a more sustainable development is to ensure that sustainable design principles are incorporated in the initial master planning stages of a development. In particular, this includes the provision of sustainable infrastructure and utilities such as sustainable water and wastewater management, sustainable waste management, sustainable transport, sustainable landscaping, sustainable exterior lighting & architecture etc.
Traditionally, green building design and rating schemes were voluntary mechanisms by which developers could demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability. However more recently in the Gulf region, and the UAE in particular, such green building rating schemes and standards have now been made mandatory and will soon apply to all new building developments, notably in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Other countries in the Middle East are looking to follow in their footsteps with the introduction of green building standards and/ or guidelines.
